A family in Melbourne has found an inventive way of introducing Filipino cuisine to Australian diners.
"Kowloon House” may sound like a Chinese restaurant but it also has Filipino food in its menu.
Restaurant manager Dennis Tito said it's a marketing strategy to encourage not only Filipino diners but Australians as well.
“Ang talagang concept diyan kapag kowloon house ang iisipin Chinese. Kapag ginawa mong Filipino parang ang Australiano sine-separate mo na. Kunwari ang pangalan mo ‘Lutong Bahay’. Kapag nalagpasan na yan nang Australiano di nila alam yan. Pero pag nilagay mong ‘Kowloon House’ na Chinese food and Filipino food pupuntahan nila,” Tito said.
Once customers have set foot inside, Tito said they just can’t resist trying out what is to them a new cuisine.
“Kapag pasok nila nakikita nila yong Filipino food. Alam nilang may noodles doon pero intrigue sila ano ito? Ano ito? Bopis, paksiw, dinuguan susubukan nila habang naghihintay sa noodles na niluluto. Can I try this? Titikman nila bibili nang bopis,” he said.
The owners admit it's the Filipino market that's the toughest to crack so they offer a little something for everyone.
