4 drown while crossing spillway in Quezon

Four people died while three of their companions survived after their vehicle was swept by strong current while crossing a spillway in Mauban town, Quezon province, Sunday evening.

Chief Inspector Rancer Evasco, Mauban police chief, identified the victims as Renato Bolado Dy, 55; Vic Raymond Pastrana Rojo, 43; Godofredo Calusin Tampoc, 59; and Merhan Remolona Almiranez, 41, all residents of Mauban town.

Evasco said the victims were crossing a spillway in Barangay San Rafael with a Mitsubishi Pajero (XJM- 825) when the water suddenly rose and swept the vehicle towards the river around 11:20 p.m.

The four victims drowned while trapped inside the vehicle. Their three companions managed to get out the vehicle.

Police said the survivors were able to squeeze themselves out from the vehicle’s window and swam to safety.

The group had just come from a birthday party when the incident occurred, Evasco said.
